Growing up in the quaint town of Okmulgee, located about 50 miles south of Tulsa in Oklahoma, my fascination with airplanes started early. The town’s proximity to a VOR (VHF omnidirectional range) beacon, a navigational aid for aircraft, meant that airplanes were a constant presence in our lives. As they soared over our farms, I developed a keen interest in aviation that eventually transformed into a lifelong passion.

Nurturing the Fascination

Early Encounters with Aircraft

Observing the airplanes passing overhead became a daily ritual during my upbringing. I could identify different airlines just by their appearances, and this simple yet fascinating activity planted the seeds of curiosity in my mind.

High School Project Sparks Interest

In high school, a project led me to explore the world of aviation more deeply. I wrote letters to airplane manufacturers, and in return, I received an array of informative pamphlets, books, and materials about airplanes. This treasure trove of information only fueled my growing fascination.

The Spark Ignites

A Memorable Spring Break

The turning point came in the eighth grade when my sister Janice proposed a trip to Denver for spring break. I was instantly onboard with one condition – she had to buy me a plane ticket. I wanted to experience flight firsthand and get a taste of what it was like to be in the air.

Love at First Flight

That inaugural flight was a revelation. I vividly remember the excitement, the rush of takeoff, and the bird’s-eye view from above the clouds. The experience was nothing short of exhilarating, and it was then that I knew I had discovered my true passion.

The Path Forward

Fueled by Passion

From that moment on, my enthusiasm for flying knew no bounds. The thrill of soaring through the skies became an irresistible draw that I couldn’t ignore.

Embarking on Training

Eager to turn my passion into a career, I delved into researching aviation training programs. The prospect of learning to pilot an aircraft became an unwavering goal.

A Family Legacy

Unveiling a Family Secret

As my journey into aviation progressed, my family shared a heartwarming revelation – my father had a connection to the world of flying as well. He used to take me to the flight deck to meet pilots when we traveled, especially during the times when he accompanied my grandmother on her departures. This hidden connection further solidified my resolve to become a pilot.

Influence of Loved Ones

The collective encouragement all family members, from Larnell to Anthony, played a pivotal role in shaping my path. Their encouragement and shared connections with aviation reinforced my commitment to pursuing this dream.

In the end, it was a combination of childhood wonder, memorable experiences, and the unwavering support of my family that propelled me toward a career in aviation. The journey from watching planes overhead in Okmulgee to sitting in the pilot’s seat was a testament to the power of dreams, passion, and the significant impact that family can have on one’s aspirations.
